White mold is real mold — usually just growth that hasn't developed color yet. Many of the molds most common in homes — Aspergillus, Penicillium, Cladosporium — start out white, gray, or pale and only darken as they mature, so a white, fuzzy patch on wood, drywall, or a basement wall is mold that needs the same response as any other: remove it and fix the moisture. Is white mold real mold?
Yes. There's no single species called "white mold" — it's a description of appearance, not a type. Where white mold grows

- The underside of attic roof sheathing, where condensation collects
- Wood framing, subfloor, furniture, and cabinetry that got wet
- Stored cardboard, paper, leather, and fabric in humid areas

White mold vs. efflorescence — the test that settles it
The most common false alarm is efflorescence: a white, crystalline deposit of mineral salts left behind as water moves through and evaporates from concrete, brick, and stone. It looks like a white or grayish crust or powder on basement walls and masonry — and it is not mold. Two quick tells:
- The water test: spray or dab water on it. Efflorescence (salt) dissolves and disappears; mold doesn't dissolve and stays put.
- The surface: efflorescence forms on inorganic masonry (concrete, brick, block) and is crusty or crystalline; mold grows on organic materials (wood, drywall paper, fabric) and is fuzzy or filmy, and it may smell musty.
